MARAUDERS ERA FANCAST: lucy griffiths as alice longbottom

“His mother tottered away, back up the ward, humming to herself. Neville looked around at the others, his expression defiant, as though daring them to laugh, but Harry did not think he’d ever found anything less funny in his life.”

modern marauders au

frank and alice longbottom
↳ Married right out of high school and not regretting it a day since, Frank and Alice live across the street from James and Sirius. They tend to help out more than they should; they replenish the milk supply, walk the dog, send over pastries at Christmas, that sort of thing. Alice attends night school, working shifts at the local florist to help pay the bills. Frank is a painter, not too well-known but good enough to sell a few a year. What they want more than anything is to have a child together, to build a family, but they’ve agreed to wait until Alice is finished her schooling to try.

The palms of his hands are sweaty and a sensation that isn’t at all uncomfortable is spreading up that back of his neck. It’s satisfying, warming in the chilly evening air that surrounds him and he knows immediately that this is so much more than the heat from the two empty flutes of champagne that sit before him; really, he’s known it all night. He’s danced with her until he can’t anymore and as he glances up from light reflecting off of slick glass, she’s in his father’s arms and twirling as if this were the first time she’d ever seen a dance floor. The elder man says something that crinkles the sides of her eyes as she lets out a laugh and he’s absolutely positive that Charles Longbottom has just said something about his son not being able to keep up with her. If he were to disagree, he can’t say that he’d have an argument. His shoulders hunch as he lets out a chuckle of his own and crosses one leg over the other, head shaking, fingers toying with the hem at the base of his trousers and he’s watching her with a look that he knows has to be absolutely stupid. It’s like the grin has been permanently fixed upon his face, and nothing could bring down this high, and he couldn’t care less. Not yet. She’d walked through the door at half-past seven in a green, tea length dress that caused his stomach to drop and his eyes to take a double glance. He knew immediately that he’d always remember that dress. Sign one. Her mood was absolutely infectious, the smell of her perfume filled his brain as she straightened his tie right away and this time, he noticed the perfect curve of a hairstyle that she couldn’t have spent more than five minutes on and yet, it looks like an hour long ordeal. Of course it does. Sign two. The slight discomfort was apparent as he took her in his arms for the first dance he’d had with her that year, conscious of how bloody close she was and just how perfectly she fit into his arms. Sign three. His eyes are locked onto her as she and his father make a show of bows and curtsies and she spins, making her way across the party and holding out her hand for him to join her. “Again?” he groans in mock annoyance, and her hands move straight to her hips before she grabs his hand, pulling him along with her as a new piece of music drifts through the dark. He won’t let himself think it just yet, he’ll save that for the morning when the elation has worn off and he’ll allow the shock and frustration with himself to set in; making a million decisions and changing his mind twice before he comes to a conclusion that he’s already made. He fancies his best friend, and though he won’t admit it, he knows. He follows her back onto the dance floor, another flute in hand and allows his focus to stay on her, on the night, on the last stretch of normalcy, on the lights and chatter and clinking of glasses for if he thinks it, everything will change.
